I have an odd problem. Due to miss information provided to me by my client's representative a Dell Server was ordered with Server R2 Essentials license. This was not discovered until after server was onsite and a vendor was attempting to install their product.
The issue is that this server really need to be in production ASAP and my Dell Sales rep cannot explain to me why I have not yet received the volume license key that was ordered and paid for 3 days ago.
So I am thinking thinking I have 2 options:. Option 1. Install Server Standard evaluation and place server in production then change the product key when the volume license key arrives.
Dell support has sent me the commands to do this. Options 2. Use my Action Pack install for Server Standard then change the key with the volume license key arrives from the control panel I know this is technically violates the Action Pack license but the intent is not to keep using it.
So please do not be MS's police force and give me crap about it. I just need to know about any technical issues. But with Server being based on Window 10 and 10s new way of tying itself to the hardware i am concerned that the license key change may cause issues.
Well first off, take the email provided for the volume license purchase and try registering it at the license portal. You could very well already have access to the licensing but just haven't gotten the itifixation from Microsoft. Happens to me all the time. Go to the VL portal, try to log in, then click the link to create an account. Use the same email as provided to Dell. Be sure to register it as a business account, not a Microsoft account. That being said, you will likely run into issues using an action pack or evaluation installer.
If anything, try to get the ISO from another volume account, install with and then provide the key later. Sense you state you have volume licenses already, can you do that image? Or do you have only and no volumes yet?? Thanks for the help Stabby, am trying to setup the account now on the Volume Licensing site. Hoping the client is still up and will see my text. Haven't had any issues come up yet, just make sure it's not a DC and that you have a GUI install apparently, this isn't a must anymore.
I'm not really familiar with the action pack rules and limitations, but as far as I understand it, you'd rather not use the key for eval or "I'm waiting for the actual key to arrive" installs as the use and reuse is severely limited. Are you absolutely sure that license isn't a downgrade?
I just went back through my server orders and Dell hasn't sold us in any form other than a downgrade going back to at least November of But then again, they are money grubbing weasels of course, so who knows. I thought they killed off the action pack ages ago, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt, but since you asked I'd go with option 1. I don't have the url, but this is lifted directly from a server requirements doc just yesterday linked from somewhere on the server eval page :.
Convert being the key, license conversion is the official name. For the moment. Until they change it. In a week. Maybe less. Just be sure you don't install the AD role; if it's still the same as you won't be able to move it from eval to licensed mode without re-installing. We ran into that with our installs of ; started with them in eval and then when we got the licenses had to re-install. What a pain. I'd confirm if this is still the case or not before you try that path.
